4 questions you should ask your bookkeeper

Bookkeeping, Business - 31/03/2022

Last week, we talked about how to choose the right bookkeeper for your business. It’s helpful to have a few key questions under your belt to work out if they’re the right fit for you.

Here are a few of our top examples.

Which software do you specialise in?

There’s a wide range of accounting softwares available. You might already have a specific software in place for your business. If your bookkeeper has a different preferred software, they might not be the right fit for you. It could take a while for you and your team to get to grips with the new software, which might be wasting time you don’t have.

If you’re managing your bookkeeping manually, it’s still good to ask which software your bookkeeper specialises in. You can learn more about that specific software and see if it would work well with your accounting needs. It also means you can start to think about any training you want to invest in for you or your team.

Am I making the most of my bookkeeping system?

You might think you know the ins and outs of your bookkeeping system, but at the end of the day, you’re not an expert. It’s better to ask someone with specific knowledge and expertise. They’ll know the fine details of the systems and softwares and will be able to get a clear picture of whether you’re using them to your advantage.

A good bookkeeper should always be looking for ways to improve the efficiency of your bookkeeping system. A part of that is keeping up with the accounting industry, technological updates and consumer demand.

Being in the loop helps them keep you in the loop. That means you’ll be getting the most out of your investment.

Have you worked in my industry before?

It helps if you work with a bookkeeper that knows your industry. Though the basics of accounts management are the same, each industry will come with different fine print.  If your bookkeeper already knows the ins and outs, you won’t have to spend time bringing them up to scratch.

The same goes for the size of your business. If your business is growing, you might want to consider a bookkeeper who’s worked with bigger businesses before.

How can you help me grow my business?

We’ve said before that a good bookkeeper should be an extension of your team. They’re working with you, not for you. That means they should be proactive. They should be prepared to offer professional advice to help your business expand and grow over time.

Is there information and advice they can give to help you increase revenue? Or save money? Will they be able to continue managing your accounts as your business grows and evolves over time?

Ask your accountant how you can best work together to facilitate smooth, sustainable growth with minimal disruption to operations, and for tips on how to successfully scale based on past experience with other clients.
