How can law firms be more sustainable?

Environment, Law - 11/05/2021

Sustainability should be a priority for any modern business. Law firms are no exception. Protecting the environment has always been important, but now more than ever, businesses need to step up to the plate.

Small changes can make a big difference. From encouraging your firm to recycle to going fully digital, sustainability needs to be at the core of your firm. There are plenty of ways to do that.

Invest in technology.

One of the best ways your firm can improve sustainability is by going digital. We live in a digital world. More and more firms are investing in technology to boost their services.  Numero can be a part of that journey. We help your firm to go digital with your accounts by offering training in top accounting systems such as Xero and LEAP.

Digital systems improve efficiency, productivity, and will often be cheaper in the long run. It’s a win-win all round.

Increase your digital practices.

Investing in technology makes it much easier to follow sustainable online practices. For example, if your firm has the technology to support remote consultations and online client meetings, you could avoid travelling. Those hours you would have spent on the train or in the car can be better spent elsewhere. Not only does this reduce carbon emissions, but you’ll also reduce travel costs to your firm. Not to mention the time it takes to commute. Again, it’s another all-round win.

Make sustainability one of your values.

Your values should influence all of your firm’s decisions and actions. If sustainability is one of your values, it will naturally trickle through your day-to-day decisions and behaviours. It holds you accountable. You can always go back to your values to remind yourself how you can stick to them and improve them.

Everyone can do their bit to help the planet, even if you’re a smaller firm. Making sustainability one of your values will encourage you to think in a more eco-conscious way. For example, there are simple steps that smaller firms can take to tackle carbon emissions, including measuring their energy consumption and minimising waste such as paper and office supplies.

Engage employees.

Carbon Trust found ‘more than three-quarters of UK employees now consider it important to work for an organisation that has an active policy to reduce its carbon emissions’. Employees already want to do their bit for the environment. All you have to do is give them the opportunity. You could run awareness campaigns and organise staff training on sustainability.

Engage them directly and ask for their input. Do they have any ideas about improving sustainability in the workplace? This also boosts morale and makes employees feel appreciated and valued.
